Ephedra is a very popular herb in traditional Chinese medicine, which has been used as herbal therapy for asthma, bronchitis, cough with difficulty breathing, joint swelling and pain in the bones for over 4000 years. In the early 1990’s ephedra started becoming a very popular ingredient in fat burners being sold in the western world. People with allergies to ephedra, ephedrine, or pseudoephedrine should also avoid ephedra fat burners.
Ephedra fat burners are believed to significantly increase the risk of stroke, because they increases metabolism and impair the body's ability to lose heat.
Ephedra fat burners must never be taken at least two weeks before and after surgery. Ephedra fat burners should not be used by pregnant or nursing women. People suffering from eating disorders should also avoid ephedra because it lowers appetite.
